There is but one giver and there are many to receive. Sun is the giver. The planets and the beings of the planets in the solar system that are innumerable are all receivers; one giver and many receivers. The receivers are innumerable. The giver is but One. Did you notice this?

Sun not only gives light but also gives life. Life and light come to us through the Sun to us. The Sun ray contains seven colours.

Each colour bestows a virtuous ability. They are:

1. Will.

2. Love-Knowledge.

3. Intelligent activity.

4. Harmony in conflict.

5. Concept.

6. Devotion and offering.

7. Orderly functioning.

These abilities are daily bestowed by Sun besides life and light. For this reason Sun is seen as the visible God by the ancients in all civilisations.

Sun is the most brilliant one that we see in the visible world. The key to his brilliance is his ability to give, to offer to others. He is the lone ranger in the sky that is ever engaged in offering life, light and abilities to the beings. This functioning of the Sun gave the clue to the humans. They realised that through giving and offering one shines forth. But to give or to offer one should have the needed abilities. Abilities have to be gained in life only to offer them to benefit the society. Education is meant for this. Education is but a sustained development of abilities which can be offered to the society.

May Sun be your goal in your effort to grow and to shine-forth.

BBC Documentary on Mathematics in Ancient India

Vedic Mathematics is the name given to the ancient system of Indian Mathematics which was rediscovered from the Vedas between 1911 and 1918 by Sri Bharati Krsna Tirthaji (1884-1960). According to his research all of mathematics is based on sixteen Sutras, or word-formulae. For example, ‘Vertically and Crosswise` is one of these Sutras. These formulae describe the way the mind naturally works and are therefore a great help in directing the student to the appropriate method of solution.

Perhaps the most striking feature of the Vedic system is its coherence. Instead of a hotch-potch of unrelated techniques the whole system is beautifully interrelated and unified: the general multiplication method, for example, is easily reversed to allow one-line divisions and the simple squaring method can be reversed to give one-line square roots. And these are all easily understood. This unifying quality is very satisfying, it makes mathematics easy and enjoyable and encourages innovation.

In the Vedic system ‘difficult’ problems or huge sums can often be solved immediately by the Vedic method. These striking and beautiful methods are just a part of a complete system of mathematics which is far more systematic than the modern ‘system’. Vedic Mathematics manifests the coherent and unified structure of mathematics and the methods are complementary, direct and easy.

The simplicity of Vedic Mathematics means that calculations can be carried out mentally (though the methods can also be written down). There are many advantages in using a flexible, mental system. Pupils can invent their own methods, they are not limited to the one ‘correct’ method. This leads to more creative, interested and intelligent pupils.

Interest in the Vedic system is growing in education where mathematics teachers are looking for something better and finding the Vedic system is the answer. Research is being carried out in many areas including the effects of learning Vedic Maths on children; developing new, powerful but easy applications of the Vedic Sutras in geometry, calculus, computing etc.

But the real beauty and effectiveness of Vedic Mathematics cannot be fully appreciated without actually practising the system. One can then see that it is perhaps the most refined and efficient mathematical system possible.

Features of Vedic Maths

There are many features of the Vedic system which contrast significantly with conventional mathematics.

Coherence - Perhaps the most striking feature of the Vedic system is its coherence. Instead of a hotchpotch of unrelated techniques the whole system is beautifully interrelated and unified: the general multiplication method, for example, is easily reversed to allow one-line divisions and the simple squaring method can be reversed to give one-line square roots. And these are all easily understood. This unifying quality is very satisfying, it makes mathematics easy and enjoyable and encourages innovation.

Flexibility - In modern teaching you usually have one way of doing a calculation. This is rigid and boring, and intelligent and creative students rebel against it. Once you allow variations you get all sorts of benefits. Children become more creative. The teacher is encouraging innovation and the children respond. In the Vedic system there are general methods, that always work, for example a method of multiplication that can be applied to any numbers. But the Vedic system has many special methods, when a calculation has some special characteristic that can be used to find the answer more easily. And it’s great fun when you spot that method.

Having only one method of, say, multiplying is like a carpenter who uses a screwdriver for every job. The skilled craftsman selects the tool most appropriate for the job and gets it done quicker, better and with more satisfaction.

So there are special methods, that apply in special cases, and also general methods. You don’t have to use these special methods but they are there if you want to.

Calculations can often be carried out from right to left or from left to right.

You can represent numbers in more than one way; we can work 2 or more figures at a time if we wish.

This flexibility adds to the fun and gives pupils the freedom to choose their own approach. This in turn leads to the development of creativity and intuition. The Vedic system does not insist on a purely analytic approach as many modern teaching methods do. This makes a big difference to the attitude which children have towards mathematics.

In this rapidly changing world adaptability and flexibility are absolutely essential for success. For the future we can expect more change and perhaps at a more rapid pace.

Mental, improves memory - The ease and simplicity of Vedic Mathematics means that calculations can be carried out mentally (though the methods can also be written down). There are many advantages in using a flexible, mental system.

Pupils can invent their own methods, they are not limited to the one ‘correct’ method. This leads to more creative, interested and intelligent pupils. It also leads to improved memory and greater mental agility.

Bear in mind also that mathematical objects are mental objects. In working directly with these objects as in mental maths you get closer to the objects and understand them and their properties and relationships much better. Of course there are times especially early on when physical activities are a great help to understanding.

Promotes creativity - All these features of Vedic math encourage students to be creative in doing their math. Being naturally creative students like to devise their own methods of solution. The Vedic system seeks to cultivate intuition, having a conscious proof or explanation of a method beforehand is not essential in the Vedic methodology. This appeals to the artistic types who prefer not to use analytical ways of thinking.

Appeals to everyone - The Vedic system appears to be effective over all ability ranges: the able child loves the choice and freedom to experiment and the less able may prefer to stick to the general methods but loves the simple patterns they can use. Artistic types love the opportunity to invent and have their own unique input, while the analytic types enjoy the challenge and scope of multiple methods.

Increases mental agility - Because the Vedic system uses these ultra-easy methods mental calculation is preferred and leads naturally to develop mental agility. And this in turn leads to growth in other subjects.

Efficient and fast - In the Vedic system ‘difficult’ problems or huge sums can often be solved immediately. These striking and beautiful methods are just a part of a complete system of mathematics which is far more systematic than the modern ‘system’. Vedic Mathematics manifests the coherent and unified structure naturally inherent in mathematics and the methods are direct, easy and complementary.

Easy, fun - The experience of the joy of mathematics is an immediate and natural consequence of practising Vedic Mathematics. And this is the true nature of maths – not the rigid and boring ‘system’ that is currently widespread.

Methods apply in algebra - Another important feature of the Vedic system is that once an arithmetic method has been mastered the same method can be applied to algebraic cases of that type – the beautiful coherence between arithmetic and algebra is clearly manifest in the Vedic system

Work is inevitable. Work gives experience. Work enables living in the present. Work keeps the minds, the senses and the body in alignment. Work leads you to the state of ‘pure experience’ – Existence. Work shuts the door upon imbalances. Work keeps the body active.

Work is the force that moves the matter of the body right from the mind. Matter is inertia and can be moved by the force i.e., work. The force of work keeps man out of inertia, or laziness. A lazy man avoids work and thereby becomes lazier. It is better to be dynamic through work than to settle down to inertness. Inertia is the strength of matter. Man tends to become heavier and heavier through inertia. The mind of an inert man slowly succumbs to depression. That means the inertia takes hold of the mind too. Thereafter he develops a peculiar logic of indifference to common reflexes of life. He questions, “Why should I get up early? Why should I take a shower? Why should I not eat whenever I like? Why should I work? Mad are people who work. Poor fellows they do not rest like me.”

The man of inertia, overpowered by such logic withdraws from normal and natural activity of life. He ends up in a state where he breaks his Will. This is the man who did not know how to work.

There is another type. Another category of men. They are workaholics. They over-work. That means, the force in them overpowers the matter in the body. It is also a state where balance is not struck between force and matter. They undertake more work than necessary. They poke into others’ life. They are of intimidating type. They mind others, business. They want to decide for others too. They carry the urge to direct, to control and to possess. They become power-mongers. They too do not know how to work.

Thus one category tends to under-work and the other category to over-work. One is underactive and the other is overactive. One does not do even the minimum required things, while the other always does more than necessary. One is hypo-tensive the other is hyper-tensive.

The mid point between the two carries the Key to work that gives ease, experience and fulfillment in life. It is called the Golden Middle Path. It calls for skill in action, where there is neither underdoing or overdoing but doing as much as is required. It is being equi-distant to inertia and dynamism and is therefore called poise. This category of people are poised in work. Work is experience when you are at poise. Work is tension when you are overactive. Work is dreadful when you are underactive. Once you are out of poise in your work, it ceases to give the right experience. It ceases to be a source of joy. It ceases to be food for the mind.

Let us learn further about the three varieties of work according to the three qualities.

Inertia (Hypo-activity): Produces sleep, laziness, forgetfulness, mistakes, loss of memory. Man suffers from loss of brilliance, disinclination to action. And even when he acts, he acts wrongly.

Man also makes instinctive wrong understanding of persons, places and situations.

Man of inertia dives so deep into indulgences of the senses to the extent of becoming an idiot.

Activity: (This means Hyper – activity): Thirst for things is a predominant trait. Covetousness, aggression, annexation, domination, longing for power and possessive attitude are the other traits of a man of hyper activity.

Desire for results predominates all actions. Man tends to over work and grows greedy. He wants to multiply and does not want to stop at anything. He is restless and ever sleepless too!

A man who is overactive, overstimulates the emotions and suffers from likes and dislikes.

Poise: This is the equator of the two poles, i.e., inertia and activity. Purity is its trait. It gives brilliance and transparency. While at work, poise gives happiness and knowledge. When poise is at work, all the senses are at ease and things are known and understood easily. Man is generally at ease in mind, body and senses.

The Clue To Work:

Poise is gained by carrying out activities of goodwill. When love and concern for others is demonstrated in activity, it is called activity of goodwill. Whatever you do, do it with love. It gives you happiness. It gives happiness to those for whom you do. The very work becomes joy. This is the clue to work.

Work involves two orientations. Doing for oneself and doing for others. The second orientation is gained when you do it with love. See how a hen feeds its chicks, a mother feeds her child. There is an act of love involved that makes you think of others in preference to you. A mother forgets her personal comforts in serving a sick child. She does not feel tired of her service to the child. She does not even feel that she is sacrificing. Thus an act of love, naturally and automatically includes in it service and sacrifice without feelings relating to it. It is a natural flow of action.

When we love someone, we do many things for them. In doing we enjoy. Why not we extend this concept to every work we do? Then we gain poise, we live in love, we spread love and the clue to work is gained.

Choose Work:

One has to choose work according to one’s quality i.e., according to one’s own nature. Then working remains natural. When we analyse, each person has certain traits that others do not have. For example, one may have good teaching qualities, another may have good administrative qualities, yet another may have affinity to persons and things and someone else may have a natural inclination towards arts, music, painting etc. There are also people who are analytical, where there are others who are synthetic. Some are concrete in their mind and some others are systematic. One needs to know what kind of work suits his nature and develop skills relating thereto. Today, many people are engaged in works, which do not suit their nature. Hence, we find many people in conflict. Conflict is the product of our involving in work, which is not suitable to our nature.

There is a golden principle in choosing work. Choose work that is suitable to you, and let that work be dedicated to the needs of the society. That means the choice of work should be done keeping in mind the needs of the society. One cannot pick up a work, which is not needed by the society. The needs of the society should be kept in mind when choice of work is done. Then the work not only feeds you but also gives you harmony. This is a happy culmination of work. It feeds you and it also keeps you in harmony.

If you choose work, regardless of the needs of the society, the society does not respond to your work and your sustenance may become a problem.

If you choose work that which is needed by the society, but is not suitable to your nature, you may sustain in society but land up in conflict. Hence the two factors play together to yield harmony.

In case you do not get the work that you like, the alternative is to like the work that is given. This requires a resigned (detached) attitude. This way also you can reach harmony through work. But this requires tremendous self-application.

In any case three factors remain to realise work in its proper sense.

a) Working for society

b) Working in tune with one’s own nature and

c) Working with love i.e., poise.

Let the three keynotes be kept in mind.

Working For Results:

These days man is pushed to work for results. To work is more important than working for results. When you work well, as per the three indicators given in the preceding paras, you enjoy the work, thereby you do the work well and it automatically produces good results. But when result preoccupies your mind, you are tensed up. You cannot work at your optimum and that affects the results.

See, when you play games, you enjoy the game well. But when you play to win, you are tensed up. Hence you cannot play as well as you normally do. If it is a championship carrying big prize money, tension prevails all over. It cannot anymore be called a “PLAY”. It is something else. We have now degraded into a situation where we degrade even play into a source of tension while the ancients conducted even work (or even life) as a ‘Play’.

child, when he/she studies a story book, remembers well every detail of it. But if it is a school book, he/she does not remember so well. Why? Because, he/she is constantly goaded to remember, to reproduce and to get the highest marks! While studying he/she is more concerned of marks and the need to remember, which stand as an obstruction to the fine process of comprehension. But studying for marks leads to a state where comprehension is kept aside and is downgraded. All study is for comprehension, but, today all study is for marks. Hence there is neither comprehension, nor development of mind.

Therefore the quiet situation is you work with love, with concern for society and in tune with your nature. Let not results bother you. Results follow those who follow the triple principle.

Means vs Ends:

Some say that means of work is more important than the ends, while others say that ends are more important than the means. But Nature tells us that every work has its procedure and its time dimension. Adoption of a given procedure and adaptation to time gives you the right clue to work. History shows that the most successful men are those who carried the understanding of the procedure and time dimension. Adoption and adaptation are the key words to accomplishment in work. Means and Ends take care of themselves in such situations.

The practice of Surya Namaskar is a sort of training to your body mind and soul (Pradnya). It works with equal force on these three aspects. It gives us physical and mental health with sharp intellect.

Only 35 to 40% of your muscles are used in daily activities. Rest of the muscles remain inactive. Surya Namaskar is a physical exercise where almost 95% to 97% of your muscles are switched on to active mode. They remain active, hours ahead during the day, till you recharge them the next morning.

You are at dis-ease when there is imbalance of Waat, Kapha and Pitta in the body. Daily practice in Surya Namaskar maintains steady state of these three, keeping the body in perfect health.

While performing Surya Namaskar the breathing exercise (Pranayam) gives more oxygen to your lungs. The rhythm of breathing becomes heavy with vitality. Each breath becomes deep and clear. It carries more oxygen to the parts of your body.
The vital points (The Chakras) in the body get charged. The Surya-Tej in these Chakras gets enlightened with the thought and sight of the Sun God.

While performing Surya Namaskar think nothing, but about the Sun God. Concentrate yourself on the meaning of the Surya Mantra, the steps in the Surya Namaskar, their sequence, the proper activities of the different parts of the body, the parts of the body where you feel stress, stretch and strain etc. This will shut your mind off from thinking. Thoughtless state of mind contains no mental stress and strain at all. It is a real rest to your mind. Freedom from mental and emotional anxiety is the sound rest to your body too.

The word ?Moksha? means to be relieved from fear and tears. It is to get freedom from all types of woes and worries. This ?released state of mind? gives you absolute happiness. All the virtues ? the divine qualities which are nothing less than the GOD HIMSELF ? are the carriers that take you to the absolute happiness-the Moksha.

The starting shloka, the Sankalpa, the prayer, the concluding shloka, the Samarpan and the shloka of dedication are important in the process of ?know thyself?. If you can?t (or don?t want to) recite these shlokas give a thought to the meaning of each shloka while practicing Surya Namaskar.

Early morning is the best time for Surya Namaskar. Don?t eat any thing at least for five hours prior to Surya Namaskar.

Follow the body postures in each step very scrupulously. If it is not possible for you at the beginning you are free to make some minor changes, here and there, for the time being. But your final aim is to attain the perfect position.

All the diagrams merely indicate only outward body posture roughly. They are not the ideal state of Asana.

Each movement of the Asana should be divided into parts and performed gracefully.

While performing the Asanas keep your belly and hip part loose. Get the feel of the stretch and strain at the particular part of the body. The rest of the body should be free of muscle tension.

Go slow. Slow speed is for SharirShuddhi ? for cleansing the body of all sorts of toxins, fats, unwanted secretions and for restoring health. Each movement of the Asana should be graceful. Use all your physical ability to experience the stretch and strain on your body while performing the Asana

There are twelve steps in Surya Namaskar. You can count five seconds for each step of the Surya Namaskar. It means that one Surya Namaskar goes for one minute (and a bit more). This is the normal speed to perform twelve Asana / one Surya Namaskar. This speed ensures SharirVruddhi ? stedy progress in overall health and happiness. At the beginning, of course, you have to go very slow.

The body posture is important. If you have any problem at any step, revise all the given information, about the particular step, in the light of your problem. Your doubt will be solved. Make use of phone / E-mail to get your doubts cleared.

You can gain perfection in the Surya Namaskar after a long and steady practice. Be patient. Maintain slow and steady progress everyday to reach to the right posture of the Asana. Be one with the art. The Sun God will take you to the path of progress.

It is said that twenty-four Surya Namaskar, if done properly, are equal to five hundred sit-ups / pull-ups. It may be a statement of exaggeration. But it is worth to experience the physical fitness that you attain after you start practising Surya Namaskar. At the beginning of the practice, one Surya Namaskar consumes 02.30 KCL. This exercise burns out a lot of calories and reduces body mass and body weight.

If your physical capacity is to perform twelve Surya Namaskar at a time, perform only five. Give importance to use all the physical abilities to perform each and every Asana of Surya Namaskar.

The seven Chakras (the vital points), in your boy govern every of your activity. They motivate you to act, give ability to perform the act and get the action done. Doctors also give prime importance, directly or indirectly, to these vital points while treating a patient. Overall heath and strength is restored through Surya Namaskar.

Persons suffering from slip-disk, arthritis, heart attack etc including pregnant women are suggested to take medical opinion before they start the practice of Surya Namaskar.

If your breathing goes fast while practising Surya Namaskar, either take some rest or stop performing more Surya Namaskar for the day.

After the practice of Surya Namaskar is over you better lay down in Shawasan / Yoga Nidra for some time.

Some act till they meet obstacles, others act inspite of obstacles, and conquer them; but some act not, fearing the possibility of some obstacles that might arise en route.” The very word OBSTACLE indicates to us the attitude required to overcome obstacles. Invoking these attitudes is to invoke the ‘Ganesha’ within us – O – Objective Knowledge – “Knowledge is Power.” Gain functional knowledge and skills in your chosen field. Lack of knowhow poses many obstacles. B – Broadmindedness – “Life, when properly tuned, can round the sharp edges in our character.” In a broader vision of Life in its entirety, obstacles are stepping stones to cultivate an inner perfection and an outer excellence. S – Sensitivity – “Be like a flower. Give happiness and fragrance to all.” A flower produces fragrance from mud, dirty water, manure, etc. T – Toughness – “The Suffering depends not on the factual happening but on the texture of one’s mind.” Cultivate a ‘tough’ mind through study of the scriptures, faith in a Higher Reality, value – based life, etc. A – Alertness – “Alert and vigilant living is a sadhana by itself.” Alertness helps one to foresee the ‘obstacle’ and nip it in the bud. C – Concentration – “Never complain, about the number of hours you have put in to do a job. How much of you was put into each hour of your daily work ?” The sun’s rays (mind) when unified through a convex lens (concentration), burns away a piece of pape r(problems & negativites) below it. L – Love of God – “Don’t tell God how big your problem is. Tell your problem how big God is. ” E – Enthusiasm – “Real men of achievement are people who have the heroism to fuel more and more enthusiasm in their work when they face more and more difficulties. Be Agressively good.”

Come, Let us all Join hands to Spread the amazing science of Mudra Science among youth and children.

This year it will be celebrated on December -10, 2011 .

Come, Let us all Join hands to Spread the amazing science of Mudra Science among youth and children.

A Scientific look : Any living body is made of 5 distinct elements :

FIRE

WIND

ETHER

EARTH

WATER

These are not as per science’s definition of elements but refer to the five building blocks that go into the formation of any living body. Several ancient health systems are based on the concept of the balance of the five elements. Indian Medical science according to Ayurved and metaphysics affirm that distortion or impairment of the 5 elements create outer disturbance and inner sickness in the body. The 5 fingers of the hands represent these 5 elements :

The Thumb

symbolises the Fire

The Forefinger

symbolises the Wind

The Middle finger

symbolises the Ether

The Ring finger

symbolises the Earth

The Little or small finger

symbolises the Water

The finger tips of every living being have many concentrated nerve root endings which are free energy discharge points. Science also confirms that around every tip there is a concentration of free electrons. By touching together of the tips of the fingers or the finger tips to other parts of the palms this free energy (Prana) is redirected back into the body along specified channels, back up to the brain. The redirected energy traveling through the nerves stimulates the various chakras. Keeping the hands on the knees stimulates the Gupta Nari and makes the energy start from the Mooladhara Chakra. Thus, the tension applied to the nerve/s and/or the neural or psycho-neural circuits formed by the mudras help in balancing the five basic elements (or building blocks). This balancing of the tension, and redirection of the internal energy effects the changes in veins, tendons, glands and sensory organs, to bring the body back to a healthy state. Keeping specified nerves stretched for specified periods tones up of the nervous system. The fingers of each hand are held folded in certain specific postures and this provides the required tension on the nerves. The fingers of each and every individual in the world are different in their shapes and sizes. These are determined and provided by nature as a tool to bring the nerves into prime condition when affected adversely. Thus, they provide a different ‘end tension’ on the nerves when different individuals fold their fingers or the same individual folds the fingers by different methods in different Mudras. This is exactly the tension required by that individual for that particular application. Nature has already bestowed us with the tools to be used to keep us healthy. Compare this with Acupressure where the nerves are influenced by the application of pressure on certain points or Acupuncture, where slight electrical impulses are conveyed through needles inserted in the body. The advantage in Mudras is that the pressure to be applied on the nerves is automatic and controlled by the shape and size of the fingers and not by external agencies. Because the Mudras work on the nerves, they are a NEURAL SCIENCE Mudra Vigyan is also a science based on the principles of the Indian Medical Science (Ayurveda) which lays down three factors primarily responsible for the body’s ills, Vata (wind), Pitta (bile) and Kapha (Phlegm). 10 types of Vayus (Winds) circulate through the nerves of the human body and can be controlled with MUDRAS.

Tatva Yog Mudra vigyan is an independent yoga, built upon the knowledge of the five fingers of the human hand.

Detailed descriptions are available in Mantra Shastra (Books of incantation), Upasana Shastra (Books on meditation), Nritya Shastra (Books on the art of Dances) and the books on the art of sculpture.

Mudra is a very exact and scientific yogic function by which one can develop or even change, one’s internal and external dispositions viz. mental (anger, emotional disturbance, intelligence etc.), spiritual (concentration, meditation) or physical (in various diseases, illnesses).

Mudras can bring miraculous mental, spiritual and physical changes and improvements in our body. They help in quickly balancing the elements of the body.

Mudras effect changes in veins, tendons, glands and sense organs.

Mudras need no prior preparation. They can be done (mostly but with exceptions) at any time, anywhere and under virtually any circumstances.

They are like literal remote control switches bringing quick and effective changes.

They help bring about permanent changes.

A constant practice of Mudras can stop or slow down the destructive changes in the human body. It can help develop a virtuous, socially amiable, non-violent, pious and courteous disposition.

Some of the Mudras can balance the elements of the body within 45 minutes; some react within a few seconds on the human body.

The ancients believed there were 24 diagnostic elements, the Gayatri mantra has 24 words, the Jains have 24 Tirthankaras, and Sanatan Dharma has 24 avatars. The 24 words of the Gayatri Mantra have a special relationship with 24 mudras known as GAYATRI MUDRAS. They have different names and formations.

The importance of Mudras is also clear from the grim qualifier to these:
